Rights Managed / Royalty Free Licensing:

There are two ways to by images.  The traditional method is Rights Managed where you purchase specific, exclusive rights to use the picture for one specific purpose and for a specific period of time.

More recently Royalty Free Licensing have become popular in some circles (and very unpopular in others). With this method you purchase a nonexclusive licence to use an image of many times as you wish, for any purpose, for the rest of your life, for just one initial payment.

Traditional and Royalty Free Assignments:

In the case of Traditional Assignments you hire a photographer by the day or half day, pay all his expenses and as his employer you own all the images he creates while in your employ. The photographer has no claim on these images and may not sell them elsewhere.  I undertake this kind of assignment for 500 Euros a day plus expenses.

With Royalty Free Projects the customer still pays all expenses but only gets a nonexclusive, Royalty Free licence to use the images.  The photographer owns the images and the copyright and may go on selling Royalty Free licences to other people or businesses. The customer may use the images for his/her own personal or business use but may not assign rights to a third party. This is not an assignment as such, you are not paying for my time but for the right to use the photographs I take during that period. It is a condition of commissioning a Royalty Free Assignment that no claim to copyright be made by the customer or his/her agents. I undertake this kind of project for 150 Euros a day plus expenses.
